The first annual West End Earth Day Clean Up went really well. Residents were very appreciative. We collected lots of trash. Suggestion for next year was to organize quadrants and assign groups to those areas. The whole group was in favor of repeating the event next year on Earth Day.
PS21’s Islington Street Lab Design Workshop with Mike Lydon is this Thursday at City Hall at 6:30-8:30 pm. Volunteers are needed to help generate ideas on how you want this amazing project to look, feel and affect the West End. Register today!
Representatives from Chinburg Properties joined us to share information about the Frank Jones Brew Yard housing project. The focus of the project is to develop reasonably-priced apartments, not high-end condos. The building adjacent to Jewell Court (the Ale House) will be 100% residential and the fermentation building will be mostly commercial with two floors of residences. Ale House construction begins next month and the completion date is summer 2017.
Apartments will range from 450 square foot micro-units (based on successful projects in Boston) to 1,100 square foot, two bedroom apartments. All units include wifi, heat and hot water.
The City will work with Chinburg to develop a construction plan to minimize impact on surrounding businesses and residents. Eric will share the plan with us once it is complete.
Cheryl Kirchner, the wife of the late Ken Kirchner (owner of Ken’s West End Pizza), has offered us the West End Pizza sign. WEP was one of the first “West End” businesses. We will keep it as an iconic sign of the #WE, so put that in your thinking caps about how we can honor this pillar of the West End for so many years.
